I would like to provide the following updates:
1. We are trying to arrange a holiday lunch during one of the weekends in December. Further details to follow.
2. The Princeton Triangle Club might be coming to Michigan this year. We are trying to see if they can perform in the metro area.
3. The presentation on "The rise of India and what it means to you" has been postponed for now.
4. The Princeton Prize in Race Relations committee for Detroit is being co-chaired by Mariah Zeisberg and me. The first meeting was held recently and we are inviting applications from the Tri-County high schools.IF ANYONE WORKS IN A PLACE WHICH HAS A NICE AUDITORIUM WHERE WE CAN HAVE THE AWARD CEREMONY WITHOUT CHARGE IN THE SPRING OF 2009, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

Dear Princetonians:
I would like to provide the following updates:
1. Richard Spina '83 has agreed to join the Club officers as secretary. David Williams '94 will move to the position of Vice-President.
2. SAVE THE DATE OF OCTOBER 15 - The Club will have an evening meeting with guest speaker Seema Chaturvedi. The title of her presentation is "The rise of India and what it means to you". Venue to be determined. For full disclosure, she is my spouse and the other Club officers approved her talk.
3. If anyone is interested in helping to coordinate a holiday lunch for early December, please contact me.
4. The new Detroit Symphony Pops schedule has some excellent programs, including Music of the Beatles in Feb 2009 and Music of Billy Joel in April 2009. If anyone is interested in coordinating a lunch and concert program, please contact me.
5. We might be meeting with local Penn alumni to watch the Princeton-Penn football game at a local sports bar. Details to come. Look forward to hearing from some volunteers.

1. I am sorry to report the tragic news that one of the Club officers, Dr. William Crowley, recently passed away. Bill was a great supporter of the Club and he will be missed.
2. On a more positive note, I am pleased to report that Mariah Zeisberg from the Univ of Michigan has agreed to co-chair the Princeton Prize in Race relations committee for the Detroit region.
As you will recall, this program encourages high school students to develop projects aimed at improving race relations in their communities.
There is information on the program on the University website.
WE STILL NEED 2-3 ALUMS WHO ARE WILLING TO SERVE ON THE COMMITTEE TO HELP SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THE PROGRAM AND HELP JUDGE THE APPLICATIONS.
IT SHOULD NOT BE A HUGE CHUNK OF TIME.

A final reminder that The Princeton Club of Michigan is planning a late spring outing to the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA). We shall meet on Friday, June 13 at 6:30 PM. There will be a section of Kresge Court for our group. We plan to have snacks and a cash bar. The DIA is open late on Friday so there will be ample time to see the galleries. Prof. Keith Whittington to Speak March 6

Talk Title: The Politics of Judicial Supremacy

Talk Description: Judicial review is usually understood to be inherently antidemocratic, and politicians frequently decry the "judicial activism" of out-of-control judges. In practice, however, the U.S. Supreme Court has often exercised the power of judicial review in ways that win political support for the Court. National political leaders have often found it in their political interest to support the active exercise of judicial review and protect the Court from its critics. Judicial activism is not simply an assertion of will by independent judges; politicians have encouraged and supported judicial activism and the rise of judicial supremacy.

Bio: Keith E. Whittington is William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Politics at Princeton University. He is the author of Constitutional Construction: Divided Powers and Constitutional Meaning and Constitutional Interpretation: Textual Meaning, Original Intent, and Judicial Review, and editor (with Neal Devins) of Congress and the Constitution. He has published widely on American constitutional theory and development, federalism, judicial politics, and the presidency. He is the author of the forthcoming Political Foundations of Judicial Supremacy: The Presidency, the Supreme Court, and Constitutional Leadership in U.S. History, and editor (with R. Daniel Kelemen and Gregory A. Caldeira) of the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Law and Politics. He has been a John M. Olin Foundation Faculty Fellow and American Council of Learned Societies Junior Faculty Fellow, and a Visiting Scholar at the Social Philosophy and Policy Center, and a Visiting Professor at the University of Texas School of Law.

As promised earlier, I want to provide details for the visit on March 20 of Professor Jeffrey Stock of the Princeton Molecular Biology Department. He has spoken before for other Alumni Clubs and has gotten excellent reviews. He will be speaking on: DRUG WARS, FOOD POLITICS, AND NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS. This will be useful if you have ever wondered about whether the cost of organic products is worthwhile and what is going on at the FDA?

I am sure he can provide insight on the current status of education at Princeton as well. We will plan a social hour from about 6-7 PM, followed by the dinner and lecture. There will be a choice of stuffed shells or chicken as the entrees. The cost for this program is $30 per person, with a $20 rate for Alumni from the classes of 2001-2006. Lunch and DSO Concert, Sunday, February 18

Mancini Music Concert:

A concert at the DSO, "Mancini at the Movies," will be held on Sunday, February 18 at 3:00 p.m. There will be a Princeton Club luncheon prior to the event at 1:00 p.m.

The concert features music from "Breakfast at Tiffany’s," "The Pink Panther," and "The Thorn Birds" — all classics whose character was defined by the beloved music of Henry Mancini. You and your guest(s) are invited to enjoy the holiday season with your fellow Princetonians at the Princeton Club Holiday Party on Saturday, December 16, 2006, from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m., at the Livonia Marriott, where we have reserved a private, non-smoking banquet room. We will have a social hour followed by a buffet lunch for you and your family. This will be followed by trivia games, entertainment and prizes. Undergrads, grads, alumni and parents are encouraged to attend. The Club President will also provide information on some of our planned activities for 2007.

RSVP BY PRE-PAYMENT. We need to get an accurate count for the hotel, so we strongly encourage pre-payment. The cost is only $16 per person if pre-paid, or $20 per person at the door. There is a $10 charge for children 12 and under. To pre-pay by credit card, click on the Visa-Mastercard icon at the top right of this web site.

BRING A GIFT FOR THE RAFFLE. There will be a gift table at the event. Though purely optional, each guest is encouraged to bring a wrapped gift item valued at $5-10 or so, such as a paperback book, picture frame, bag of candy, tree ornament or other knick-knack. These gifts will be raffled off to the lucky attendees.

ATTIRE IS CASUAL. This is foremost a social event, and the venue is festive, not formal. Orange and/or black clothing is particularly encouraged, but the most important thing is that you be comfortable. Wear what you like, come as you are. This is an informal event so feel free to bring children.

Directions to the Livonia Marriott are provided below. The hotel is conveniently located off I-275. See you there! Driving Directions: Take I-94 West to I-275 North. Seemant Chaturvedi '85 Leads PC Michigan

Dr. Seemant Chaturvedi '85 is now the President of the Princeton Club of Michigan. For those of you who don't already know, besides receiving his undergraduate degree from Old Nassau in '85, he completed his MD degree at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in 1989. He did his residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in 1993, and is currently Associate Professor of Neurology at Wayne State University. He is an expert on strokes, and has written numerous articles and at least one book on the subject. He was also elected Member of Best Doctors in America, 1999-2000, Best Doctors in America, Midwest, 1996, and the Detroit Free Press Best Doctors in Detroit.

So we know at least two things for certain. First, the Princeton Club of Michigan will be in very capable hands. And second, at every major PC Michigan event, there will be at least one doctor in the house!

Thanks go out to Seemant, for his selfless service to Princeton's Michigan alumni. And congratulations go out to the rest of us, who will benefit greatly from his diligent and faithful leadership.

Jeff Page '64 Passes the Reins of Leadership
